Antifouling is commonly inspected before each season, but not every system automatically needs a complete annual rebuild. Remaining film, condition, fouling, time afloat, use and the technical data sheet are decisive.
Assessing self-polishing antifouling
Self-polishing products consume film during use. A contrasting first coat can act as a control layer. When it becomes widely visible or the specified minimum film is no longer present, maintenance is required. Depending on the product, one maintenance coat may be sufficient on a sound, compatible surface.
Assessing hard antifouling
Hard antifouling remains as a matrix on the hull. Visible colour does not prove that enough active performance remains. Fouling, condition, seasonal history and product requirements determine recoating. Cleaning and product-specific preparation are generally required before application.
Maintaining biocide-free coatings
Biocide-free systems differ greatly. Eroding coatings are renewed differently from hard trailer-boat coatings or silicone foul-release systems. Clean and repair only according to the specific maintenance instructions. Aggressive in-water brushing can remove coatings and may be prohibited by local rules.
These signs require inspection
- heavy or unusually early fouling,
- a visible control coat or primer,
- cracks, blisters, flaking or loose edges,
- exposed hull or corrosion,
- an unknown or incompatible existing coating.
If primer or hull is exposed or the system continues to flake, a simple maintenance coat is not enough. Remove loose areas and restore the full compatible system.
A practical seasonal plan
- Clean the underwater hull at a suitable wash area after haul-out.
- Record fouling, wear and adhesion.
- Identify the product and existing coat number.
- Use the data sheet to decide between cleaning, local repair, maintenance or rebuild.
- Plan overcoating and launch intervals.
The configurator explains the required system for your starting condition. The quantity calculation makes area, coat number and litres transparent.
