When an underwater coating is useful
During long or permanent periods afloat, fouling can increase resistance, change speed and handling and affect cooling-water intakes or propulsion components. Growth can develop faster in warm, nutrient-rich waters than in cold or low-fouling areas.
A suitable antifouling or biocide-free underwater system is therefore usually useful for boats kept afloat. Selection depends on hull material, speed, cruising area and the existing coating.
When a boat may manage without antifouling
- Trailer boats: prompt cleaning may be sufficient when they are hauled out after each use.
- Very short stays afloat: regular inspection and cleaning can often manage fouling over a few days.
- Dry berths or boat lifts: regular complete drying limits many types of fouling.

What alternatives are available?
Biocide-free systems include eroding resin coatings, hard cleanable two-component coatings and silicone foul-release systems. They differ in coating build-up, maintenance and suitable use.
