For sports boats, the distinction between sail and motor boat is not enough. Hull material, maximum speed, time afloat, trailer use, cruising area and fouling pressure are decisive. The existing coating must also be compatible with the new system.

Self-polishing antifouling for boats kept afloat

Self-polishing antifoulings erode in a controlled manner during use. They are particularly suitable for boats that spend much of the season in the water and move regularly. The permitted speed is product-specific. Seajet 031 Samurai is designed for normal to medium fouling up to 40 knots. Seajet 033 Shogun is intended for heavy fouling. Neither product is approved for aluminium.

Hard antifouling for speed and mechanical loads

Hard antifouling forms a more abrasion-resistant matrix. This can suit fast boats, drying moorings or regular launching. Seajet 037 Coastal is intended for GRP, wood and steel up to 70 knots, but not aluminium. Its hard layer does not polish itself away; cleaning and sanding may be required before later coats.

Aluminium and biocide-free systems

Use only products expressly approved for aluminium. Seajet 034 Emperor A is a copper-free, self-polishing antifouling for aluminium up to 40 knots. Biocide-free alternatives work differently: Seajet 021 EKO erodes, Seajet 2300 forms a hard cleanable surface for trailer boats, and Bioclean Eco is a silicone foul-release system.

Four details lead to the right choice

  1. Identify hull material and the existing coating system.
  2. Use the actual maximum speed and trailer use.
  3. Consider the cruising area and local fouling pressure.
  4. Check the product data sheet for coat number, application and maintenance.
